Dealing with Conflict Webinar – Jan. 17, 2018 @ 10:00am CST – Facilitator: Rev. Christy Drechsel
According to a recent leadership survey, 95% of churches experience some level of conflict. The good news though, 94% of those churches report positive results when the conflict is handled effectively. Fear of confrontation and of the unknown drives people to avoid conflict. This training is aimed at taking the fear out of the situation so that reconciliation is possible by examining these topics: the dynamics of conflict, the theology of conflict, examining biblical examples, and understanding conflict reconciliation “Ground Rules”. This training is intended to help the church in anyway. Therefore, whomever the church feels will benefit from a deeper understanding is invited to join the conversation. This may include: Elders, Board Members, Pastoral Relations Committee Members, and Church Staff.
Our facilitator, Rev. Christy Drechsel was born in San Diego, California, but moved to Texas when she was 2. Since all of her childhood memories are of her time growing up in Alvin, Texas, she considers herself a Texan. Christy moved to Fort Worth 20 years ago and has called North Texas home ever since. She graduated from Brite Divinity School in May of 2012 and was ordained the following August. Prior to her studies at Brite, she received a Master of Science in Human Resources and Training with an emphasis in Conflict Management from Amberton University and a Bachelor of Science from Texas Christian University in Speech Communications.
Like many ministers, Christy ran from her call for quite a while. In that time, she managed a hotel and sold tile. What she didn’t realize is that while she thought she was running from her call, God was in control, walking her toward a better understanding of that call. All the experiences in those years has informed who Christy is as a minister today and deepened her call to walk alongside congregations during difficult times and transitions.
Christy has served First Christian Church of Fort Worth in various roles since 2009. As Associate Minister there, she has the privilege of not only serving the congregation, but also those who come to the Community Eye Clinic which is housed in the church and serves the under-served in our community. She also serves as the Trinity-Brazos Area Minister of Nurture. Through this call, Christy works with the Camp and Conference program, leads the Area Shepherd program which provides clergy support, and facilitates various training opportunities. When she is not spending her hours at the church, she is enjoying quality time on a lake somewhere in North Texas with her husband, Mike, and daughter, Avery. And of course, she doesn’t miss a TCU Football game, GO
